This evening was the first time I have sat down to play a game of RISK on the actual board, and not on the computer in over a year (I think). I have finished almost 900 games on Conquer Club, but haven't managed to get a group of people together to play the original non-computer version in a really long time. So, today, Joe Hardie, Shawn Saunders, Steve Harris, and Brandon Clift all made their way over to my place at 7:00pm to get down and dirty with some hand-thrown dice.
We started the festivities with some Panda Express that Joe and I went to get before everyone else arrived. Then, did a bit of review for a couple of the guys who had not played in a really long time and soon we were off and playing.
The funniest thing about the entire evening was that I, the player who plays RISK every single day, got eliminated first from the game. I might have had the opportunity to make a different move in Round 4, but I didn't want someone to get eliminated that quickly, so I did something else that wound up coming back to haunt me in Round 6 when I was gone from the competition.
Shawn, Brandon, and Joe were the last three alive, but then Shawn decided to go home, so I took his place to finish off the game. In the end, I wound up with the "win" although I'm not sure it should really count. I can promise that Shawn would not have played that same way that I did (he's a bit to vindictive when he plays), and without that approach I'm pretty sure he would have been the next out anyways.
The evening was a lot of fun, and I will have to gather up some guys again in the next couple of weeks to see what we can do. Perhaps we'll play a rousing rendition of Mission RISK next time around. That is something I've never done before and it looks like it could be a lot of fun.
