A random fact about me that very few people know is that I am 0 for 27 in games of Scrabble against Holly. She will even let me build a big lead only to crush me at the last moment when I think I'm going to put her away for the first time. It's a sad world I live in when dealing with that game. You would think that when playing against the same person so many times that sooner or later the luck would turn my way, or that because I am an English major I would know of a few better words to use to gain the points I need.
Nope, that isn't the case. The worst part is when I am studying the board very carefully and planning my next move. I can see a great spot to spell out a 6 or 7 letter word, and even get a nice bonus square of some sort, when BAM, Holly used the one spot I had to have in order to make it work, or she blocks it with her word and all my letters are now worthless.
Othello on the other hand, I've only played with Holly something like three times because she can't handle how brutally I destroy her when we play. Of course, because of that it means we don't get to play very often because she doesn't like to lose; at least she doesn't like to lost that badly. Othello is one of my favorite games though, and I used to play it online all the time because it comes standard on the PCs nowadays. As a matter of fact, it is known as "stones" in a favorite book series of mine, which is where I learned a few tricks on how to play.
Games are a lot of fun, but it seems the ones I like to play are best played with only one or two other people, so it isn't all that conducive to play in large groups at gatherings or parties. I'm also a bigger fan of the games that require lots of strategy, like RISK, Othello, and a couple of others. Games that force you to out think the other person are the best in my opinion.
