The Difference Music Can Make

I almost didn't get a post in before midnight. That would have been a shame since I have managed to get three posts in three days so far. I'm glad I could make it four for four this evening before turning in for the night.

Several months ago I was lamenting to Holly about how I wish we had a way to listen to music in our apartment more conveniently. Sure, we have two different computers, both with plenty of music on them, but the problem is that if we want to listen to the music and both of us are doing homework on a computer in different rooms then it means one of us has to turn it up really loud for the other to hear. That was working fine for the most part, but it was definitely a hassle at times.

The best solution I could come up with was that we needed some kind of stereo that we could put on the shelves located smack dab in the middle of our apartment so we could both hear the music as easily as the other person. Well, given that we both have iPods, it only seemed natural to get one of the stereos that uses an iPod to play the music.

I spent a good two months looking around for a good deal, waiting for sales, or discounts to show up in the advertisements from the mailbox, or online. I wasn't having much luck though, and finally decided that I might just have to bite the bullet and pay a little extra.

As luck would have it, we found a great deal during a sale at Radioshack one day and wound up coming home with a nice stereo that we can hear throughout the house, is compatible with our iPods, and looks nice too. We were pretty happy with our choice and it has made a world of difference ever since.

You see, we were starting to get a little concerned over the amount of time we were spending just sitting on the couch watching five different television shows each evening. It was becoming apparent that we needed to get away from that habit while we still had the chance, and decided that if we could listen to our music more often (in a convenient manner), that we could have something to distract us from the television and encourage us to work on other things.

It worked.

While I still spend a pretty decent amount of time on the computer each day with HTML and CSS coding for school, Conquer Club for my hobby, and other things for life, I have noticed a distinct shift in other ways. I no longer turn on the TV while doing the dishes or other chores. I used to do that for the background noise, but would soon become distracted and take three times as long to do what I was trying to do. Now I just turn the iPod on to shuffle, plug it in, and work away without getting so distracted.

It has been a big help to me, and I think it has to Holly as well.
