Goal: Read the Top 100 Books

So, like all people in the world, I have a tendency to set goals that I don't always achieve, but this new one is something I think I can actually manage, even though it is going to take me a little while to do.

As an English major, despite only to be an editor/web designer, it has come to my attention that perhaps I should actually have read some of the classics if you will. Now, the hard part with that is the fact that compiling a list of the Top 100 Books is something of a subjective chore, which many people will argue about for a long, long time.

So, after a couple hours of searching through Google, I had almost given up hope when Holly presented me with the following link: Modern Library's 100 Best Novels

Of course, there are actually two lists on there, one by the Board and one by the Readers, so now I have the problem of trying to decide which one to actually use in my quest. I've read through both lists a couple of times and I feel like the Readers list is the one for me given that it holds not only a large number of classics but also some of the common "standbys" in fictional literature such as Ender's Game. Of course, some will argue that I'm just following the crowd, but I think I'll be okay in the end. Perhaps when I am finished I will go back and pick a few off the other list as well.

So, with that in mind, here are what I feel will be the various highlights of the list:

1. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

3. Battlefield Earth by Ron L. Hubbard

6. 1984 by George Orwell

12. Catch-22 by Joseph Keller

14. DUNE by Frank Herbert

51. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

77. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

90. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

Granted, that book listed at #51 is probably a bit of a stretch as a part of the 100 Best, but I do know it is quite popular, and I've never read it before, so I'll give it a shot and probably get a couple of good laughs out of it. Perhaps if all of you are lucky I'll post a few thoughts here and there on what I'm reading at the time.
